Privacy Policy

This policy explains what information the LEAD project collects when you use the website and app, how we use it, who processes it on our behalf, and the choices you have — including how to delete your account at any time.

01 Who we are

LEAD is operated by the Africa Foundation as an academic research project. For privacy questions or requests, contact info@afrikavakfi.org.

02 Information we collect

Account information (only if you create an account)

To access protected materials (Archive datasets, Briefs, Reports) you can create an account. Sign-up, sign-in, passwords, and email verification are handled by our identity provider, Auth0 (by Okta). We receive your email address and the name you provide.

We never see or store your password. It is created and managed entirely by Auth0; the LEAD project has no access to it.

Foundation access code

Protected materials also require a foundation-issued access code. The code you enter is stored in your browser and checked by our server when you open a protected file.

Usage analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand aggregate usage. It collects standard analytics data — pages viewed, device and browser type, approximate location derived from your IP address, and a randomly-generated visitor identifier stored in your browser. We do not use it for advertising.

Preferences stored on your device

Your theme, selected countries and topics, and similar settings are stored in your browser's local storage on your device; we do not receive them.

  • To provide the map, news, and research library.
  • To authenticate accounts and release protected materials to authorized users.
  • To understand aggregate usage and improve the service.
  • To maintain the security and integrity of the project.

04 Who processes your data

Website hosting and the functions that release files.

News headlines and links are fetched from public sources (e.g. Google News, AllAfrica) through our own proxy; we display links and short snippets, not full third-party articles.

We do not sell your data and do not use it for advertising.

05 Cookies & local storage

Google Analytics sets identifiers to measure usage. We use your browser's local storage to remember preferences and your access code. You can clear these any time via your browser settings.

06 Data retention

Account information is retained until you delete your account (see below). Analytics data is retained according to Google's standard retention settings.

07 Your rights

You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data, and object to certain processing. Account holders can delete their account directly below. For any other request, email info@afrikavakfi.org.

08 Your account & data

Manage the account you use for protected materials. Deleting your account permanently removes it from our identity provider and cannot be undone.

09 Children

LEAD is intended for researchers, students, and professionals and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

10 International processing

The processors above may store and process data outside your country. They provide their own safeguards for international transfers.

11 Changes

We may update this policy; we will post changes here with a new "last updated" date.
