Privacy Policy

This policy explains what information the LEAD project collects when you use the website and app, how we use it, who processes it on our behalf, and the choices you have — including how to delete your account at any time.

  • We never see or store your password — sign-in is handled by Auth0.

  • Leader portraits, fonts and flags load from other services (Wikimedia, Google Fonts, flagcdn) — see section 4.

01 Who we are

LEAD is operated by the Africa Foundation as an academic research project. For privacy questions or requests, contact info@afrikavakfi.org.

02 Information we collect

Account information (only if you create an account)

To access protected materials (Archive datasets, Briefs, Reports, the Leaders section) you can create an account. Sign-up, sign-in, passwords, and email verification are handled by our identity provider, Auth0 (by Okta). We receive your email address and the name you provide.

We never see or store your password. It is created and managed entirely by Auth0; the LEAD project has no access to it.

Foundation access code

Protected materials also require a foundation-issued access code. The code you enter is stored in your browser and checked by our server when you open a protected file.

Usage analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand aggregate usage. It collects standard analytics data — pages viewed, device and browser type, approximate location derived from your IP address, and a randomly-generated visitor identifier stored in your browser. We do not use it for advertising.

Preferences stored on your device

Your theme, selected countries and topics, and similar settings are stored in your browser's local storage on your device; we do not receive them.

News RSS feeds

RSS feeds need no sign-up: the feed address you copy from the News page contains only your country, topic and source choices, and we store nothing about who uses it. A feed reader's requests reach our hosting provider like any other page visit.

Downloads

Leader records can be downloaded by signed-in users with the Leaders access code. The ready-made CSV or Excel file is released by the same access check as the Archive; nothing is created from your selections and nothing you choose is sent to us.

  • To authenticate accounts and release protected materials to authorized users.
  • To understand aggregate usage and improve the service.
  • To maintain the security and integrity of the project.

News headlines and links are fetched from public sources (e.g. Google News, AllAfrica) through our own proxy; we display links and short snippets, not full third-party articles.

Content loaded from other services

Some pages show images and fonts that your browser loads directly from other services. Like any website you visit, these services receive your IP address, your browser type and the address of the page that asked for the file. We send them no personal data, and no account or cookie of ours is involved.

Wikimedia Commons
Leader portraits on the leader pages, the Leaders index and the Map's biography balloon (Wikimedia privacy policy).
Wikipedia and Wikidata
Only for a leader added after the last update of the site: the Map may look up that leader's biography directly from your browser.
Google Fonts
The typefaces used across the site (Google privacy policy).
flagcdn.com
Country flag images.
We do not sell your data and do not use it for advertising.

05 Cookies & local storage

Google Analytics sets identifiers to measure usage. We use your browser's local storage to remember preferences and your access code. You can clear these any time via your browser settings.

06 Data retention

Account information is retained until you delete your account (see below). Analytics data is retained according to Google's standard retention settings.

07 Your rights

You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data, and object to certain processing. Account holders can delete their account directly below. For any other request, email info@afrikavakfi.org.

08 Your account & data

Manage the account you use for protected materials. Deleting your account permanently removes it from our identity provider and cannot be undone.

09 Children

LEAD is intended for researchers, students, and professionals and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

10 International processing

The processors above may store and process data outside your country. They provide their own safeguards for international transfers.

11 Changes

We may update this policy; we will post changes here with a new "last updated" date.
